License to Cary (LTC) Classes

Next Class:
August 13, 2016

Dos Espadas, LLC (Two Swords Protection) offers certification for both the Texas License to Carry (LTC) and Florida Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP).  The Texas and Florida license are both available for use by Texas residents.

If you live in Texas, get a Texas license. A Texas license enables Texas residents to bypass the background check when purchasing a new handgun (since you already passed a background check to obtain the license). The Texas license is good for either 4 or 5 years (depending on when you got your license).

If you travel a lot, you may also want to get the Florida license. It was one of the first to be offered and continues to have excellent reciprocity with other states.  The Florida license is less expensive to obtain and renew and it is good for 7 years.

There were several changes to Texas LTC law that went into effect September 1, 2013 and again in 2016. Make sure you get our up-to-date class to know how these changes affect you.

Discounts

PLEASE NOTE: I believe that if married, both husband and wife should carry a firearm. For that reason, I offer a special discount to legally married couples. You will see the discount on the payment page after you register for the class.  I also offer a discount for individuals who already hold a Texas CHL or LTC and just want an update on the new laws or to hear this information taught from a different perspective.

I close registration after reaching a maximum of 20 students to ensure quality instruction. If you are part of a group that wants a custom class at a location that you provide, I teach discounted classes for groups of 15 or more students. Please contact me if you are interested.

Why Two Swords Training?

We teach all the legally required course topics (and then a WHOLE LOT MORE).

Out training meets the state requirements for Florida and Texas licenses.

  • Currently, the requirements for the Texas license are 4-6 hours of training (excluding range and written test time).
  • You must also pass a written exam and range proficiency test. Due to the shortened hours, there will not be much training in how to shoot a firearm. Contact the instructor if you need training prior to the LTC class.

Before the change in course duration, many LTC classes filled a lot of the required course time with "fluff" to fill out the required number of hours. Even then, students attending our classes felt like they were "drinking from a fire hose" because we used every moment of time to cover critical issues and concerns that you need to know in order to effectively conceal, carry, and use a firearm to survive a dynamic critical incident. With the time change, most instructors just teach the material required to pass the exam. But we don't feel that is enough. So while we make sure you will pass the exam, we give you the most essential information to avoid wasting money on bad holster and gun choices, and show you how to safely practice for the day we hope never comes -- the day you have to defend yourself.  Private instruction and the NRA Basic Pistol course area also available.

Here are some of the topics that we'll cover in class:

    • Know and be familiar with cylinder rotation direction of revolvers
  3. Ammunition

Cost of Getting a LTC or CWP license

There are three components to the cost.

  1. You must take a course from a certified instructor. (Range fees are included in your class cost unless you already hold a license.)
  2. Then you must pay the application fee to the state(s) to which you apply.
  3. Fingerprinting costs

What does the course cost?

We thought about this question long and hard. Here's what we considered.

  • We want to be competitive with other trainers, but we're also offering about twice as much useful content as others.
  • We also offer discounts for groups or family members -- and a special discount for husband and wife. (If you have a group of 10 or more, contact me for group pricing.) We believe it is important for everyone in the family who is legally eligible and responsible to be able to carry a firearm to defend the family. So we structured the pricing to give a price break when multiple people from the same family were carrying. (Full family pricing is on the registration page.) It is great when a husband and wife can both work to protect their family and they can share in the learning experience together.
  • Pricing includes your range fee for the shooting exam (unless you already hold a permit and don't want to shoot the test again).  Here's the current pricing structure:
2swordsprotection.com LTC Class pricing
# Students / # State certifications Price
1 student / 1 state with required exam
$80
Husband & wife 1 state with required exam $135
Additional state $15
Classroom instruction only (no test or range time included)
$40

What does the license application cost?

Each state is different. Some states just advertise a flat price. But the reality is that every state pays $42 of your application fee to the FBI for the background check (which includes fingerprint analysis). Prices are subject to change.

  • Florida's license is economical -- especially since it is good for 7 years.
  • A Texas license can expedite your purchase of a firearm in Texas. The license now lasts either 4 or 5 years depending on when you get it. A Texas license is typically $140 for a new application and $70 for a renewal. No class is required for the renewal.
  • A Florida license is typically $112 for the new application and $102 for the renewal (for non-residents of Florida). The license is good for 7 years.

Join the NRA

I believe that every American who cares about their 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms should be a member of the National Rifle Association. No other organization has done so much to stand for our freedoms in the U.S.A. I am a lifetime member as is my son. Make it a family tradition in your family, too! This is a freedom that few nations have -- let's protect it. Thomas Jefferson commented that the 2nd Amendment was the one that kept government from taking away the freedoms granted in the rest of the Constitution.

The primary purpose of the NRA is to create and distribute educational programs to help people enjoy their 2nd Amendment freedoms in a safe and responsible way. Their budget reflects this as education is far and away their biggest expenditure. (It is NOT political lobbying as some people think.)

But the NRA is also a watchdog group looking out for government's unceasing efforts to encroach on our right to bear arms. The Supreme Court has ruled that is an individual right. But it might only take us agreeing with one U.N. designed treaty to cause us all to have to register our guns and then have them confiscated. Does that seem farfetched to you? Well, watch the video below and then think again! Then join the NRA before it is too late! You will receive a subscription to one of several fine publications, discounts on a number of items and courses related to firearms, and the good feeling that you are supporting an organization who is looking out to protect YOUR freedoms.

And if you are ever near the Dulles / Herndon / Sterling Virginia area, check out the awesome NRA firearms museum. It is worth a trip out there just to see that!
